The boat is one of the attributes of virgins, and the shape of the mandorla (Italian: mandorla, “almond”) is, according to some interpretations, a representation of the vulva, announcing rebirth into life on the other side. Red, white, and green symbolise love, life, and hope in Dante’s Divine Comedy:
“Three maidens led the dance: one of them dressed in purple… the second like an emerald, the third as white as snow.”
The boats are like gateways through which a woman passes. Losing virginity becomes a form of rebirth. To fully experience it, a harmonious dance of love, life, and hope is required.
